Garibaldi Jean

Garibaldi Jean was born in Jacmel, on May 19th, 1975. He debuted in 1999 without a formal art education; a driven passion, his love for the creative process, and the freedom of thinking supported by a raw talent were his only tools. However, it did not take him long to realize that some type of formal education is necessary in order to reach his ultimate goal. Thus, some of his painter friends started to teach him some techniques, and he depended his research on the art of self-dictate manner, consulting books and specialized broadcasts. With more confidence, Garibaldi and three other of his artist friends founded a cultural and artistic group, No Art Cultura, which promoted a philosophy they called the “Sarcraism” (same etymology as the word “sacred.”) This philosophy is a spiritual quest; members of the group meditated and used well-being instead of the material. They organized several exhibitions locally. Jacmel, Haitie. At 27, Garibaldi signed up for a music school in Jacmel )Dessaix Babptiste School_ where he learned to play the cello. There, he found a lot of inspiration for his plastic art creations; because in his words, this allows him to understand life differently.

In 2013,  Garibaldi was the first promotion that has entered FOSAJ, Art Center of Jacmel, where he had the  0pportunities to acquire more knowledge, techniques, and opportunities to exchange and collaborate with many artists.

Today, Garibaldi still wants to become a better artist and hopes that “the beauty and the hormony found in art” will flow in each one of us. “ His works range from paintings, sculptures to installations and performance. Each color used has a meaning and a purpose. His inquisitive and curious mind pushes him to learn about his predecessors and the history of art. He incorporates what he lean in his creations. Garibaldi says that he oftern works while listening to music (classical preference). He feels that helps with the creative process. He always looks for the meaning of life through  spirituality, which is reflected in all his works.
